Commissioner Liana Buchanan

Board Member

Liana Buchanan has been Victoria’s Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People since 2016. In addition, she has been a part-time Commissioner of the Victorian Law Reform Commission since 2015.

Liana has a background in oversight and system reform for people experiencing disadvantage and those affected by family and sexual violence. After beginning her career as a lawyer in agencies such as the Women’s Legal Service, her subsequent roles include Senior Legal Adviser to the (former) Attorney-General the Hon Rob Hulls, Manager of the Office of the Secretary in the Department of Justice, Director of the Office of Correctional Services Review and CEO of the Federation of Community Legal Centres.

As Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People Liana is responsible for promoting children’s rights, regulating organisations that work with children to prevent child abuse, and monitoring services for children and young people, including those in the out-of-home care, child protection and youth justice systems.
